The Spring 2020 MBSR class has been cancelled at this time.

Given the current public health official's recommendations to avoid close, crowded spaces we feel it is the prudent thing to do to cancel classes for the next few weeks.

We appreciate your interest in Upstream classes and we hope that you will check back with us in a few weeks to see when the next class series will begin.

Feel free to e-mail us at info@upstreamsc.com or call Jemme at (803)960-7737. Thank you and please accept our wishes for your good health.

Be well, Jemme and Hilda

New Year, New You: Exercise Your Mind in 2014 with Upstream

We all make New Year’s resolutions: eat more healthily; buy that gym membership; spend more time with the kids. How about taking time out for yourself – and your mental wellness?

This January, Upstream: A Center for Mindfulness Practice and Holistic Mental Health will offer its fourth seasonal 8-week class series in Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction, or MBSR.

As explained in The State newspaper in a recent feature on Upstream, MBSR is the scientific study of living in the moment and letting go of the stress that takes a mental and physical toll on the body.

Longtime Columbia-based mental health professionals Dr. Hilda White, Board Certified Psychiatrist and Jemme Stewart, Licensed Professional Counselor, developed Upstream to introduce Columbia to MBSR, a class series-based method of taking care of the mind just as one would take care of the body.

“As mental health professionals, they both believed in the mind-body connections – when there is mental stress, there are often physical symptoms as well, and neither should be treated in isolation,” describes Bridget B. Winston for The State.

MBSR, which was developed at the University of Massachusetts Medical School in the 1970s by Jon Kabat-Zinn (with whom Hilda trained personally), has been statistically proven to reduce anxiety, stress, worry, burnout from work, fatigue, sleep issues and chronic pain.

This New Year, resolve to exercise your mind – as well as your body – with Upstream’s 8-week Winter 2014 Class Series. Additionally, private sessions for individuals and corporate training courses for offices, business groups or company retreats are available upon request.
